Reminders - Database Transition - Wilson OmniFile

In one week, Wilson Omnifile will no longer be available on the Wilsonweb platform. As previous reminders have noted, OmniFile Full Text Select is now searchable on the EBSCOhost platform. We have added a separate link to the EBSCO version of OmniFile on GoWYLD and will soon remove the other link.

If your library has its own website with links to databases, please update your link to point to http://proxy.lib.wy.us/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?authtype=ip,uid&profile=ehost&defaultdb=ofs instead of hwwilsonweb. (or your campus proxy server, if you are a community college)

If you have done any customization of database groups (known as profiles) in EBSCO's administration tool, then you may want to review whether you would like to include the new OmniFile database in any of those groups. If you need assistance with EBSCOadmin, please contact des@will.state.wy.us

eJournal Portal notes - It has taken some time for EBSCO and Serials Solutions to work out the details of the transition. At this time, we have a working search against the new EBSCO database, but the list of titles in OmniFile (the EBSCO version) are not showing in our A to Z list. I have added another version of the EBSCO OmniFile database today that will show up tomorrow and should have the holdings associated with it. There may be a few inconsistencies between holdings and searches for a few days as this issue works itself out.

Novelist

With the spring release of The Hunger Games, demand for the trilogy and its read-alikes will be high. To find similar dystopian reads in NoveList or Novelist K-8, search Hunger Games.

The first item in your result list is the first book in the Hunger Games Trilogy and includes links to Title Read-alikes, Author Read-alikes, and Series Read-alikes. If you click on the title and move into the full record, you will see a list of books on the right and below that, an option called Search for More.

The latest Kids & Books newsletter from Novelist provides strategies for locating Read-Alike content and a section called Silver Screen: From Book to Big Screen.

To see the newsletter, go to GoWYLD.net and select Novelist. Click on Teaching with Books on the right side and scroll to the bottom of the page. Novelist issues four newsletters that you can subscribe to: NoveList Notes, NoveList RA News, Kids & Books, and NextReads Notes.

Chilton Library integrates eBay motors service

As of January 9, 2012 the ChiltonLibrary resource from Gale includes the integration of eBay motors! Working on cars can be a difficult task; learning how to do it is half the battle - finding the correct part(s) can prove just as difficult. To help users acquire those often hard-to-find parts, ChiltonLibrary now seamlessly integrates an ebay search right into the user work flow. Anytime a user moves through the search path and arrives at a specific part, a search of ebay is automatically conducted based on the user's vehicle. It's that simple. Users can just click thru to eBay to continue their search.

New books added to OneClick Digital Audiobooks

You may remember the message from WYLD Shared Purchases Chair, Maggie Swanger, a couple of weeks ago which announced that we would be purchasing additional, single use titles to supplement the subscription collections in OneClick Digital audiobooks.

Check the 'newly added' tab in OneClick for these new titles, including best sellers, regional authors, and series fiction. Please remember that due to publisher restrictions, these new titles are available for only one user at a time. You will see an option to place a hold on titles that are currently checked out to another user.

We will be adding many more titles over the next few months as well as the usual 30 to 35 monthly additions to the subscription collections.

Reminders - Database Updates - GVRL & Wilson OmniFile

This is a reminder of two upcoming changes in databases.

First, Gale will be upgrading the current Gale Virtual Reference Library on December 19th. This change will not require any change to links or MARC records, but the interface is significantly different. For more information about the new GVRL, visit http://www.gale.cengage.com/media/training/GVRL/basics.htm (it may take a couple of minutes to load)

Secondly, Wilson OmniFile Full Text Select will be available on the EBSCOhost platform by the end of December. However, access to Wilsonweb will not end until sometime later in January, giving us plenty of time to update links and get full statistics for the month of December. For a short period of time, you may be able to access OmniFile in both places.

On the horizon for sometime after the first of the year will also be an upgrade to the new Proquest searching platform. We have not yet scheduled that migration. More information about that change will be made available in January or February.

Over 1,800 topic pages linking you to articles, primary source documents, media, and more. For school, public and academic libraries

eLibrary Curriculum Edition includes full-text magazine and newspaper articles, maps, photographs, TV and radio transcripts, government publications, and reference collections to respond to questions on world events and people in today’s news, history, geography, social and debate issues, sciences, social sciences, and more. From eLibrary Curriculum Edition you can access History Study Center and ProQuest Learning: Literature resources.

History Study Center is a collection of primary and secondary sources and covers global history from ancient times to the present day. Includes historical documents, transcripts, video clips, articles and study units.

WYLD Shared Purchases recommends 3M's Cloud Library for Wyoming eBooks

I am happy to announce that the Wyoming State Library will contract with 3M to become an early adopter of 3M's Cloud Library. We hope to begin implementation in January and we hope that this downloadable eBook platform will provide a good solution for our state. More details about this new service will follow as we begin implementation, but here is brief review of some of the features.

. Every library in the WYLDcat system will have access to a shared site with a shared collection. (Unfortunately, 3M cannot currently work with multiple authentication services, so UW patrons cannot be included in the license.)
. We will purchase title-by-title and will own the titles we purchase. Like most other downloadable eBook platforms, 3M employs a one-book, one-user-at-a-time model.
. New titles can be added to the group collection and will be accessible to everyone. Some Wyoming libraries have already offered to contribute funds to add more titles to our collection.
. 3M currently works with most eReaders except for Kindle. We know that this is a disadvantage. 3M also knows that this is a serious disadvantage for their product and they are currently negotiating with Amazon.
. 3M has developed eReaders that can be purchased by libraries and circulated among patrons.

H.W. Wilson databases transition to EBSCO

This is a reminder that EBSCO expects to have all H.W. Wilson products available on the EBSCOhost platform by December 31, 2011. At that time, links to Wilson products will redirect to the EBSCOhost site.

The only statewide subscription for Wilson products is Wilson OmniFile full text select. The contract period is through June 30th of 2012. We will still have access to the OmniFile content during that time, but it will be searchable through the EBSCOhost platform after the transition.

Any sites with additional H.W. Wilson products should visit the EBSCO transition page to determine whether those products will be continued and how your site will be affected.

Recorded Books One Click Digital Audiobooks now available for testing

We are currently testing Recorded Books' Once Click Digital service for Audiobooks after our subscription with EBSCO expires at the end of November. Recorded Books content will no longer be available on the EBSCO platform after the end of December and EBSCO has little content with multi-user licensing other than the Blackstone Collection to compensate for the loss of the Recorded Books collections. We anticipate making One Click Digital accessible statewide on GoWYLD in early November and would like input from library staff on using the service.

ClinicalTrials.gov: the NIH & NLM's registry for drug trials

This is a resource FREE and available for finding both federal and private clinical drug trials for a large number of diseases and conditions. The registry contains information on interventional trials focusing on experimental treatments or new approaches to known therapies. Observational trials, those addressing health issues in large groups of people or populations in natural settings, are also found in this resource.

The content is current, searchable and updated as new information becomes available. Content is helpful to investigators, health professionals and consumers.

Facts: The registry currently contains 114,315 trials with studies featured in all 50 states and 177 countries. The website has 65,000 visitors daily.

U.S. National Library of Medicine has Environmental Health Resources for Kids

The National Library of Medicine (NLM) has several fun environmental health websites with content targeting school age students, parents, educators and the general public. They are all free!

ToxTown http://toxtown.nlm.nih.gov , also available in Spanish, is designed as a tool to help one explore familiar locations where toxic chemicals may be found. They include common sites such as a city, farm, town and port. They also have interactive graphics which aid the student to see what toxic chemicals may be found in different settings in those locations. Other information on the website includes a listing of chemicals found in everyday settings with descriptions and warnings. They also provide alphabetized indexes on all hazardous chemicals featured on the website and disasters which may affect environmental health. Teachers will find rich resources on the “For Teachers” web page including activity ideas, Spanish language resources, clip art, promotional materials and more!

ToxMystery http://toxmystery.nlm.nih.gov is an interactive resource for elementary age children, available in Spanish too, that features toxic chemicals that may be found in the house. Toxie the Cat is their interactive guide through rooms in the house in the search for hazards. Each room has several hazards and the each hazard has to be identified by the user and if the user finds the number of hazards specified, Toxie dances on the web page. Also featured on the web site are clickable parent resources with links to other environmental health web sites, and a web page for teachers with actual lesson plans, and activities that can be used in the classroom.

Environmental Health Student Portal http://kidsenvirohealth.nlm.nih.gov is designed for middle school students with environmental health topics on air pollution, climate change, chemicals and water pollution. Games and activities, videos, experiments and projects are suggested for each topic. Teachers will find rich resources to engage their students in active learning in each of those topics. The website also offers glossaries, fact sheets and other reference materials to assist with homework. Career ideas in Environmental Health Science is another featured subject so that students with more interest can investigate and plan for jobs in the field.

We understand that many users have been experiencing technical problems with creating accounts, downloading files, and using the new version of the audiobooks service as implemented by EBSCO in the acquisition of Netlibrary. Due to the number of complaints, the WYLD Shared Purchases Committee and the Wyoming State Library are actively looking for a replacement service for our users. Please check back on the GoWYLD site for news about audiobooks later this fall.

Mango Languages Mobile

Learn languages everywhere you go with the free app for the iPhone® and iPod touch® (it also runs on the iPad®). Full featured, Mango Mobile Library Edition gives you access to all the Mango language courses offered through GoWYLD.

Users need to have an existing account to log in - the app does not work with the public accounts that people may create to buy their own Mango products. They will need to visit GoWYLD or your library's website (if you have links to Mango there) to create a new account first. EBSCO Publishing and The H.W. Wilson Company Make Joint Announcement of Merger Agreement

Ipswich, Mass. — June 1, 2011 — EBSCO Publishing (EBSCO) and The H.W. Wilson Company (Wilson) have merged in what is being viewed by the companies as an ideal match. This combination of organizations will allow the strengths of each to benefit existing and forthcoming products & services.

With 180 combined years of experience serving libraries, EBSCO and Wilson have traveled similar paths, but have maintained unique advantages and abilities. Wilson databases will be loaded onto EBSCOhost over the coming months. EBSCO will continue to maintain WilsonWeb until such time that all Wilson databases are available on EBSCOhost and customers have been transitioned to EBSCOhost.

Netlibrary Reminder

A reminder for Netlibrary users. Although the Netlibrary website has a giant banner message that says "Netlibrary is moving to EBSCOhost - Preview eBooks Today", our content subscriptions for the service will remain the same through fall of 2011. There are no plans to add eBooks to our subscriptions with EBSCO. Hopefully EBSCO will release a publicly accessible preview of the eAudiobook service soon as their plans are to move users to the EBSCOhost platform in mid-July whether they are eBook or eAudio customers.

I will send out update messages with more details about the changes to eAudiobooks this summer as soon as I have them from EBSCO. Three things are certain: Users will all be redirected from the Netlibrary site to the
EBSCOhost platform; users will be required to create new accounts on the EBSCOhost platform; and the Netlibrary Media Center software will no longer function.

Check out two new literature collections on GoWYLD! Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections and LION (Literature Online) are now available statewide through the University of Wyoming's Proquest expansion. LION provides cross-searchable access to many of the resources in the Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections as well as Poets on Screen and Shakespeare Audio Plays. The Chadwyck-Healey Literature Collections includes the Bible in English, Editions and Adaptations of Shakespeare, and the W.B. Yeats collection.

Novelist- Search: poetry. From the list of Books, select American Poetry. On the right, under Search for More, select Teenager’s poetry. Select the book, Things I have to tell you, and then click on Check WYLDCAT to find out if your library owns it. There is also a tab for Lists and Articles. There you will find Notable and Best of lists for poetry.

Wyoming Authors Wiki- Browse by genre (on right) and select poetry. Look at Gaydell Collier, Peggy Simson Curry, Gretel Ehrlich, Lillian Van Burgh. Note information on the right to add authors.

EBSCO has begun promoting their new eBooks platform on the Netlibrary website at http://www.netlibrary.com. You will notice a banner message announcing this preview on the main page. This link may be confusing, as it will take you to a preview of how eBooks will look on the EBSCOhost platform. (last week, the link just took you to a list of EBSCO databases and offer no explanation of what you were supposed to be looking for there) Please note that nothing has changed about our subscription to Netlibrary - we DO NOT offer eBooks to users beyond the public domain eBooks (non-downloadable) that have always been there.

We can't, apparently, have them hide the message, but here's what you can expect from EBSCO/Netlibrary that does directly effect us in Wyoming in the next few months.

First of all, there are no changes in our current subscriptions. At this time, we continue to only offer eAudiobooks in three collections (Blackstone, Recorded Books Premium Core, and Recorded Books Children's and YA). We also have the public-domain eBooks that can only be read in the browser. (The titles are also available from Project Gutenberg and most *can* be downloaded from that site).

EBSCO is moving both the Netlibrary eBook and eAudiobook customers to the EBSCOhost platform this year. The first collection to be moved is all the eBook content. Since we do not license eBooks through Netlibrary, this is currently not an issue for WYLD. During the summer, all eAudiobook content will be moved to EBSCOhost - and our users will all be automatically forwarded from http://www.netlibrary.com to the EBSCO site.

I have also been told that the Netlibrary Media Center will be phased out at the same time.

Please let me know if you have any questions about Netlibrary. I hope that the above explanation will help alleviate any confusion that the preview ads in the service may have caused.

Culturegrams and more Proquest products now available on GoWYLD

The University of Wyoming recently expanded their contract with Proquest
to include licensing use for selected Proquest products for all public,
K-12, and special libraries in the state.

We have just started adding some of the products to the GoWYLD website -
http://gowyld.net/dbases.cfm , and will continue to do so over the next
few weeks. Look for a page with general information to be announced soon.

The first changes that you may have noticed are the addition of Proquest
Historical Newspapers to the Proquest Central databases. Next, more
content was made available in SIRS. We now have access to SIRS Government
Reporter, SIRS Renaissance, SKS Web Select, and SIRS Discoverer, all
linked from the regular SIRS home page.

Today you have access to CultureGrams from Proquest as well. It is
available under the subjects: Encyclopedias, Dictionaries & Maps; General
Topics; K-12 (Kids' Resources); and Student Research. Of course, you can
also click on the letter C to find it from the alpha list.

Announcing 2011 Statewide Resource Trials

Based on the committee’s research and feedback from our fall survey, the WYLD Shared Purchases Committee has selected several databases for statewide trial. To access these trials, please visit:

Each of the databases will then require its own login. Instructions are posted on the trials page. The trials will be available for the next two weeks (through March 14th).

Spotlight! on NLM Resources -Drug Resources -Part 2 -Wed. February 23rd

This Spotlight! session presented by John Bramble, will cover three of the National Library of Medicine’s drug related tools: Pillbox; DailyMed; and the beta version of MyMedicationList.

•Pillbox enables rapid identification of unknown solid-dosage medications (tablets/capsules) based on physical characteristics and high-resolution images.

•DailyMed provides high quality information about marketed drugs, which includes information from FDA package inserts. The online resource provides health information providers and the public with a standard, comprehensive, up-to-date, look-up and download resource of medication content and labeling as found in medication package inserts.

•MyMedicationList is a prototype application that helps users manage their medication lists and make the records readily available when needed. This personal medication list can be printed out and serve as a reminder to the individual for taking medications, or as reference information to support continuity of care at providers’ offices or hospitals.

In this hands-on Spotlight on NLM Resources session, attendees will learn about the Drug Information Portal and the MedlinePlus Drugs & Supplements Database. The Drug Information Portal covers over 17,000 drugs from when they are in clinical trials through their U.S. FDA approval period to when they are available in the marketplace. The MedlinePlus Drugs & Supplements is a part of the MedlinePlus suite of consumer health resources. Data comes from the over 1000 brand name and generic prescription and over the counter drugs provided by the American Society of Health Pharmacists and the evidence-based Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database that includes 100 herbs and supplements monographs.

There are 8 topics (sessions), each containing multiple, short recordings that focus on the GOWYLD databases.

Play the videos (Discover it), do the exercises (Try it) and utilize the resources (Learn it) to assist patrons, train staff, work with students, and to enhance your own research.
This website will be available for at least six months, so that you can use it as a training tool or database refresher.

Firefox and Proxy authentication for remote access

Recent updates to Firefox, including 3.6.11 and 3.6.12 have complications with storing cookies from the State Library proxy servers. We are actively trying to find what settings need to be changed in Firefox to make proxying work again.

If any users contact you and report that they've received a message in their Firefox browser telling them that they must enable cookies to use this service (and they have cookies already enabled) then we suggest you ask them to use an alternate browser. We have tested our proxying services against current versions of Internet Explorer, Opera, Chrome and Safari and all are working correctly. It is only Firefox that is having this problem. It also seems that Firefox browsers 3.6.10 and below still work as well.

When we discover a solution, it will be posted here as well as on the appropriate email lists.

Introducing Proquest Central

The University of Wyoming Libraries have acquired a large new database called ProQuest Central. In the licensing agreement, they were able to include the public, special and school libraries (community colleges already have access). This new database offers twice the number of full-text titles as any other database we have. Included in ProQuest Central are a number of subject specific databases, as well as ProQuest Newsstand which includes the Wall St. Journal, L.A. Times, the Chicago Tribune, the New York Times and hundreds more. For a complete description of ProQuest Central visit the official product brochure.

Gale has improved access to the content in Scribners and Twaynes by moving the content in these resources to the Gale Virtual Reference Library (GVRL) eBook platform. This change offers access to these award-winning titles with all the robust functionality available on the GVRL platform, including improved citation tools, content language translation, enhanced search options, and ReadSpeaker technology.

Scribner Writers Online and Twayne's Authors Online can also be cross-searched with Gale periodical resources (PowerSearch) and Gale Literature Resources, including Literature Resource Center, and LitFinder and content in the Gale Virtual Reference Library.

These products are now available as 'Scribner Writers Online' and 'Twayne's Authors Online' on GoWYLD.net. Earlier this week, Gale's Biography Resource Center was upgraded to Biography in Context and is the newest member of the In Context family of resources. In Context is Gale’s new portfolio of online solutions

Changes to GoWYLD databases coming soon!

In response to users' suggestions and the need to better highlight the broad array of resources available to Wyoming citizens, we will soon be updating the GoWYLD.net pages to add new features to the presentation of all the library resources that are available statewide.

Highlights are:

1. All the subject areas for searching are shown as links on the main page, rather than in a drop down list.

2. Search widgets (forms) for both Gale and EBSCO products are shown on the first page. Both of these forms will search multiple EBSCO or multiple Gale products all at once.

3. The 360 Search form has been moved lower down on the page, in response to users' suggestions that it should not be the first, default search.

4. The pages that show individual resources (after clicking on a subject area or after selecting the first letter of a product) will have a search box that initiates a search directly into that product, where available.

5. A new link has been added to the description of HeinOnline that will open a page with a complete list of all libraries where Hein is available.

6. A new graphic has been added to the public note when a product is only available for in library use (Ancestry Library and Hein Online)

Service Issue with EBSCOhost's Teacher Reference Center

EBSCO has confirmed a known issue with Teacher Reference Center not returning results.

Our experience has been that it is working sporadically, but most of the time any search will simply say that no results were found. You will also notice that when searching a group of databases that includes the Teacher Reference Center, no results will be found for the entire group of searches.

Updates will be posted as soon as this issue is resolved.

Proquest and possible service issues

Updates to Gale Resource Centers

Gale has released new versions of several of their resource centers. As of the past week, six of them have already been updated.

Two important thing to note are that MARC records are no longer applicable for the Opposing Viewpoints service, so we will be removing those from WYLDCAT. Also, if you have saved any bookmarks (known as Infomarks in Gale-speak) in the older versions of these products, those will only go to the opening search page of any service.

Updates to Medline Plus

As of this morning, MedlinePlus has a new look. The entire site has been redesigned with a new layout and color scheme. Some highlights of the new design are:

A Videos & Cool Tools page that makes multimedia content easier to find and searchable.
A Share button on all health topic pages and interactive tutorials that allows you to share links to MedlinePlus through your favorite social networks. See the Diabetic Diet topic page as an example.
A medical dictionary search box on the English homepage for quick look-up of medical terms.
A search cloud widget on the homepage, and a widgets page where you can find options for embedding MedlinePlus content in your own blogs, personalized homepages, and other sites.

Gale Offers Free Access to Information on Gulf of Mexico Oil Spill

Gale is providing free access to content from GREENR (Global Reference on the Environment, Energy, and Natural Resources), making reliable, expert information regarding the Gulf of Mexico oil spill readily available. GREENR is a one-stop site providing news, analysis, background information, video, primary source documents and statistics – all vital resources for understanding the ever-changing conditions in the Gulf of Mexico.

Librarians can install a widget (http://www.gale.cengage.com/oil/) on their library’s homepage, Facebook page, blog or websites, allowing their community to access the information at the library or from any computer with an Internet connection. The widget, available until August 31, 2010, will connect users to a portal page with content for all levels of interest.

eLibrary not renewed

This spring, the WYLD Shared Purchases Committee recommended that eLibrary and eLibrary Elementary not be renewed, due to low usage and high cost. The contract renewal date was July 1, 2010.

The two databases have been removed from the listings at GoWYLD.net and from the menu of choices for remote access patrons.

If you are linking to the eLibrary databases from your library's website, you should remove those links as they will no longer work as soon as Proquest has completed the renewal process.

EBSCO Adds Premier Databases to Statewide Wyoming Contract

EBSCO has notified me that they have completed the work to add Academic Search Premier and Business Source Premier to all Wyoming accounts. In the process, they have removed Academic Search Elite and Business Source Elite from all the Wyoming accounts. As the Elite database content is completely contained
within the Premier databases, there was no reason to have both listed.

If your library web page links to Academic Search Elite and Business Source Elite, you should change those links to go to the Premier databases instead.

Summer Reading and Bookflix

Summer is a great time to get into Bookflix. Young children can enjoy being read to and the early reader can practice their reading and fall in love with stories.

Go to http://gowyld.net/dbases.cfm and select Bookflix from the B title list. Unless you are in the public library, you will need to enter your library card and pin.

Bookflix is a literacy resource for grades PreK-3 that pairs classic fictional video storybooks with related eBooks. Animation, audio and interactive games are designed to reinforce core reading skills.
The fiction and non-fiction pairs fall under nine themes. There are several pairs that would work nicely with the Make a Splash summer reading theme (see Animals and Nature for books such as Come on Rain, The Great Man-eating Shark, and In the Small, Small Pond)

Shared Purchases Database Updates

The WYLD Shared Purchases Committee has been actively reviewing the current database product offerings over the past year. Based on the fall needs assessment, several new products were added. Many of our shared purchases are up for renewal for July 1, and the committee reviewed some of those products in light of the recent additions.

We are exited to announce that after the EBSCOhost renewal has been processed, Academic Search Premier and Business Source Premier will now be available statewide. You may remember that public libraries and schools had access to the Elite (less comprehensive) versions of these EBSCO databases. Libraries may expect access to those databases sometime early this summer.

Due to low usage and high cost, eLibrary and eLibrary Elementary will not be renewed. The committee felt that other K-12 offerings, including many of the new Gale products such as Grzimek's Animal Life, Kids Info Bits and Student Resource Center Junior adequately cover this area of research.

With the addition of the Gale Biography Resource Center, and also due to low use, the Committee has also recommended that Wilson's Current Biography Illustrated not be renewed.

All other products will be renewed as usual for Fiscal Year 2011. The Committee will continue to review other resources throughout the coming year.

Mango Languages for Wyoming

The WYLD Shared Purchases Committee is excited to announce that Mango Languages will soon be available for statewide use by Wyoming citizens. One of the top requests from the needs assessment the committee conducted last fall was a language program. As you may recall, we previewed several language products during a trial period and the survey results showed an overall preference for Mango. This product has been purchased for one year using the remainder of funds contributed to a shared purchases pool by the public libraries and UW.

We expect to have the product available by May 24th. More information about marketing tools and training materials will be available next week.

In the next few days, Gale will be adding access to the new resource
Grzimek's Animal Life Online to our statewide accounts. The Wyoming
Community Colleges subscribed to this purchase with their credits from
Gale and it will be available for all Wyoming users for a year.

Updates to Remote User Access for WYLD Resources

The State Library will be making changes to how resources are presented to users who log in remotely.

A list of selected, high interest, key databases on the remote access
screens will be organized by broad subject areas and then links will
direct users to gowyld to view all the categories and databases available. Databases unique to certain libraries will also still be listed at the top of the remote access screens.

Users may have to log in again, after returning to GoWYLD, but the links from those pages provide more direct access to most resources anyway. The only reasons for any user to be logging in to http://wyld.state.wy.us/dbloginform.html is if they 1) need access to library-specific resources (not statewide products) or 2) Need to use Bookflix. All other statewide databases are available through the main
proxy server from the GoWYLD links.

Please note that this change effects users logging in with public, special, or school library profiles. Any user from a community college will continue to be redirected to their college website.

EBSCO Publishing acquires Netlibrary assets from OCLC

This is very new information, but it appears as though we will continue with service as normal for the Netlibrary products we license (eAudiobooks) until the end of our subscription term, which is late 2010.

As more information comes to light, we will inform Wyoming libraries as to how our Netlibrary services may be affected.

Gale access using IP geolocation

Testing for geolocation for access to Gale products is now finished. To see the new code for connecting using this method, visit http://will.state.wy.us/wyld/gale/urls.cfm.

You just need to know your Gale Location ID and the database shortname to create the URL. All widgets created using Wyoming location IDs at http://support.gale.com will use the GeoIP method.

I will be updating the URLs on the gowyld.net site today to use GeoIP, so please report any access issues with Gale products right away.

If a user's IP address does not pass the GeoIP check, they will be redirected to the State Library proxy server. However, if the original URL they clicked contains one of the community college location IDs, then they should be redirected to the college's proxy server instead.

Gale Databases on GoWYLD

We have just finished added all the new Gale databases to the GoWYLD.net
list of databases at http://gowyld.net/dbases.cfm

Databases have been assigned to subject categories, are available under
the 'browse by subject' list and are listed under the alphabetic browse as
well. To see ALL databases, simply click on the 'see all' link at the end
of the alphabet list.

You will not yet see the Gale databases listed as part of the Federated
Search under 'Quick Search for Articles and More' as Serials Solutions
(the federated search vendor) and Gale were experiencing technical
difficulties with adding many of these products to the service.

EBSCO Updates

Two new features were introduced in EBSCO this week.

First, we have enabled the mobile profile for EBSCO, so that patrons using mobile devices will have a better experience when accessing content in nearly 20 of our subscribed databases. Look for the 'mobile access' link next to the database name on the http://gowyld.net/dbases.cfm page.

Gale Products for Wyoming

EBSCO Animals

EBSCO no longer provides the EBSCO Animals database. It has been updated and offered as the Encyclopedia of Animals, which is accessible through Primary Search, Middle Search, Searchasaurus, and the Kids Search interfaces. For example, when you click on 'animals' in Searchasaurus, all the articles are from the Encyclopedia of Animals.

Additional Databases now available statewide from Gale!

Thanks to the University of Wyoming, we now have statewide access to two additional Gale databases: Eighteenth Century Collections Online, and 19th Century U.S. Newspapers.

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) is a digital archive of over 138,000 English and foreign language titles printed in the United Kingdom during the 18th Century and includes thousands of works from the Americas as well. It includes books, directories, Bibles, sheet music, sermons and advertisements.

19th Century U.S. Newspapers is a collection of 500 newspapers with access to approximately 1.7 million pages of primary source newspaper content. The full-text content and images from numerous newspapers are from a range of urban and rural regions throughout the U.S.

Gale is working on updating access for all our locations today and tomorrow, and I will have the databases added to the GoWYLD page today. I will also email out specific URL formatting for individual sites later today or tomorrow.

We will be updating the MARC records in WYLDCAT for the 19th Century Newspapers, as they currently show only for the community colleges. We will also be receiving a file of records for the ECCO collection soon and will load those as well.

Ask a Librarian in Novelist

You already know how useful the Ask-A-Librarian feature is in EBSCOhost, now this same great feature is available for NoveList, NoveList Plus, NoveList K-8, and NoveList K-8 Plus. Just like EBSCOhost, this feature is activated and controlled through EBSCOadmin. The Ask-A-Librarian link can go directly to your readers' advisory experts.

Bookflix access issues with Safari browser on MacOS

We've had a few reports of problems using the Bookflix database with the Safari browser on MacOS. In these cases, the problem occurred in a school where proxying must be done with this database. The redirect for the proxying, plus the redirect from the Scholastic service itself, apparently is not handled by default in Safari. The State Library does not have the resources to support Safari or MacOS issues, but it may very well be the case that some configuration changes to Safari (comparable to 'trusted sites' in IE) could alleviate this issue. Because of these problems, we are currently recommending using Firefox on MacOS to access Bookflix.

In an effort to increase access to useful and sometimes critical announcements regarding the databases available to Wyoming citizens, I've launched this blog. It is my intention to post information about access, new features and other database related news items here.

Other Wyoming State Library staff may post information here relating to database training and related issues as well.
